These Chocolate Chip Bagels are a favorite around here. If you love Panera Bread's Chocolate Chip Bagel, you'll for sure love these!
My girls LOVE Panera Bread bagels but complain of stomach issues and headaches after eating them. Grains, gluten and yeast don’t make me or my family feel very well because of all of the inflammatory properties in these ingredients. For the past few years I have been experimenting and making our own at home. Make sure to check out my absolute favorite, Maple Cinnamon-Sugar Bagels.
My youngest has been asking for quite some time for me to come up with a recipe for a chocolate chip version.
So, this past week I surprised her with these for breakfast one morning. She absolutely loved them and has been begging for more!
Ingredients Used To Make These Chocolate Chip Bagels
avocado oil
raw honey
filtered water
apple cider vinegar
almond flour
arrowroot flour
baking powder
sea salt
dairy/sugar-free chocolate chips
avocado oil spray
dairy-free cream cheese
raw walnuts
These bagels are made with almond and arrowroot flour, myhealthy flour alternatives that I recommend. If you stick to these flours when baking, it is just fine to enjoy all your favorite baked goods. You absolutely don't need one ounce of man-made white flour, sugars or yeast!
What's The Problem With Yeast?
Yeast is a type of single-celled fungi that lives in colonies and requires moisture and warmth to thrive. Under certain circumstances, however, yeast can become harmful, particularly if it is given opportunity to flourish in the gut. There is a lot of compelling evidence that yeast and fungus play a role in a number of the health problems people face, according to author, researcher and fungus expert, Doug Kaufmann, (knowthecause.com). This is why I have chosen to eliminate yeast from mine and my family's diet. Why put it in your body when you can avoid it?
How To Make These Chocolate Chip Bagels
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl, whisk together the almond flour, arrowroot flour, baking powder and sea salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together apple cider vinegar, avocado oil, water and honey. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and combine until smooth. Stir in your chocolate chips. The dough should be somewhat wet and sticky.
Next, insert dough into a piping bag or gallon size freezer bag. Cut the tip off with scissors and pipe the batter until each one is filled. Spread and pat with fingers or a spatula to evenly distribute the dough batter.
Bake bagels for 20 to 25 minutes until somewhat firm to touch. I usually go the full 25 minutes.
Remove from oven and cool a few minutes before removing from pan. The longer they sit, the easier they are to cut in half.
After cutting the bagels in half, toast under a broiler for a minute or two.
Serve warm with dairy-free cream cheese.
A Few Chocolate Chip Choices
Here are a few chocolate chip choices I've listed below. These three brands are all dairy & sugar free. Of course, the Luv brand is 80% cocoa which will have a slightly different taste than the other two.
These are best served with Walnut Honey "Cream Cheese" right after you toast them. It's pretty ridiculous the ingredient list in Panera Bread's version. All I use is three simple ingredients...
dairy-free cream cheese (Whole Foods Market)
pure raw honey
raw walnuts
I actually love the texture and taste of my bagels better than Panera Bread...I’ll take mine over theirs any day! Let me know if you give them a try!

Make sure to start checking bagels at 20 minutes. I usually go the full 25 minutes. These are best when toasted.  When you cut the bagels in half, make sure to toast them under the broiler for a minute or two before adding dairy free cream cheese.
