Linen Closet Makeover (Transformation & Organization)

Even the smallest of closets can be turned into a beautiful & functional space. Here are a few tips and ideas on how to transform your linen closet into something you can be proud of, (because everything has a place).

For the past few years since we moved into our new home, I would pass by our linen closet hoping one day soon I could actually put it to good use.  Well, we finally made that happen and it feels so good.

When we first built our house, we made sure each closet was the exact size and look we were wanting.  This was not the case with this tiny storage closet.  Our builder added it in at the last minute thinking we might need some extra storage.  We really didn't have much time to put a lot of thought into this particular space, but we were thinking we might use it for something like a coat closet. We weren’t really sure how it was going to be utilized until we moved in.

Eventually, due to the fact that there was absolutely no shelving, we just kept a few baskets of cleaning supplies and my husbands tools in there for awhile. You can definitely say, it was our least favorite room in the house. This closet is located right outside of our girls bathroom across the hall.   There is not a whole lot of storage room in their bathroom, so they were in much need of some extra closet space.

With our new vision for this closet, we were thinking they could have their own personal containers to store their extra things, while also leaving room for our linens, blankets and extra toiletries. Here is the before...just a tiny closet with absolutely no shelves. It was actually a different color before we painted it white. In this picture, it is not totally finished with the painting.

BEFORE...

The past few months, I started thinking and planning about how we could make this tiny closet into a beautiful and functional space. I knew it wouldn't take much to bring my vision and ideas into a reality.

The hardest part is definitely just finding the time to do it. I made sure to have all the supplies ready and waiting because I knew we would probably tackle this project at the spur of the moment when we could squeeze it into our schedule.

Supplies Needed To Complete This Project

  • Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Wood shelves
  • Natural woven baskets

First of all, the painting needed to be finished and some shelving for sure had to be added. I would then add a few storage baskets to make it organized and well, just beautiful to look at.

Steps To Complete This Project

  • Remove everything from closet, wipe down the walls, and vacuum/mop floor
  • Paint walls color of choice
  • Install wood shelves

We painted it our favorite white color called, "Weathered White". My husband added the shelves and my daughter took care of all of the organizing. I think she did a fantastic job!

What Items To Store

  • Towels
  • Washcloths
  • Sheets
  • Blankets
  • Toiletries such as shampoos, soap, toilet paper, cotton balls, etc.
  • Cleaning supplies

Tips To Make Closet Over-The-Top

  • Fold towels neatly
  • Roll towels and put in baskets
  • Put soaps and cotton balls in glass containers
  • Incorporate wall decor & artificial potted plants

I believe that everything should have a place, not only for productivity, but for health as well.  Creating order is so very important. Things like this take time, especially when you build a house, do everything yourself and lead busy lives.  Well, it finally all came together and we are so happy with the way it turned out. It was a fun little project that we did together as a family.  In fact, it has become our new favorite closet in the house. I open up the door often just to take a look and see how beautiful it truly is.
