Healthy hot cocoa? Why yes!! But you would never know it by the way my family drinks it up. Its that good!

When cold weather rolls around, hot chocolate is definitely a favorite around our house.  I was never really a fan of it growing up until I started making it myself.  It always seemed to be just a watered-down, powdery drink.  I mean what did I expect? It was from a packet usually at ballpark concession stands...you know, one of those premixed mixes that consists of unhealthy oils and preservatives, (not even worth drinking). Never again. There is just NO comparison to my homemade version, real ingredients that make this treat so decadent and rich.

Ingredients To Make This Hot Cocoa

To make this drink you will need:

  • almond milk
  • cocoa powder
  • Stevia
  • vanilla extract
  • sea salt

I love the fact that I can control the ingredients, making it to my liking, (extra chocolaty and creamy)...not to mention way healthier. The best part about it, my recipe is sugar and dairy-free, which means I don’t have to worry about my waistline and unhealthy blood sugar spikes.  I like to use a dairy-free alternative, like almond milk. I promise, you will not even miss the traditional cow's milk. And then for the sweetener, I use SweetLeaf Stevia for the perfect sweetness.

How To Make This Hot Cocoa

  1. Add almond milk, cocoa powder, and stevia to a saucepan over medium-low heat.
  2. Whisk until completely smooth and simmer for about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Let the hot chocolate come to a slight boil then remove from heat.
  4. Stir in vanilla with a pinch of sea salt and pour into a mug.
  5. Top with coconut whip cream and dark chocolate shavings…a must!

This is one of the easiest and most delicious drinks you will ever make. To take it over the top, you must top it with coconut whip cream and chocolate shavings.

One of our favorite things to do is visit a Christmas tree farm every year. I make up a triple batch of hot cocoa and put it in a thermos. When we get to our destination, I pour the hot chocolate into some really cute Christmas cups and we walk around with our hot cocoa. It's one of our favorite traditions that we enjoy so much.
