French Onion Soup - (Dairy & Gluten-Free)

The BEST French Onion Soup that is sure to please…so delicious and full of flavor. Dairy & gluten free!

There’s nothing better or more comforting on cold, chilly days than savory, hot soup.  The cold weather makes me want to cuddle up by the fire with a big bowl of one of my favorites, French Onion Soup. But whether it's cold or hot outside, this soup is a favorite of mine year round.

My husband once took me on a date to a little French cafe and that’s where I was introduced to an authentic version of this delicacy.  It was so delicious! Well, that little restaurant closed down and I have never experienced a French Onion Soup quite like it since…so recently I went to work to recreate what that French lady served us that day. 

The secret to this recipe is caramelizing the onions. It is so hard for me to not hurry up the process, but I promise you don’t want to skimp on this part.  Let them be...the longer the onions cook the better. This is where all the flavor is born. 

My recipe is also dairy-free, but I promise you won’t miss the traditional texture or flavor.  In fact, I made sure my version to be creamy because I’m not a fan of a watered-down, brothy soup. 

What You Need To Make This French Onion Soup

  • onions
  • beef bone broth
  • coconut milk
  • coconut aminos
  • apple cider vinegar
  • fresh garlic
  • arrowroot flour
  • avocado oil
  • sea salt

How To Make This French Onion Soup

  • Heat avocado oil in a large stockpot or dutch oven over medium heat.
  • Add onions, and cook, stirring often, until caramelized and golden brown, about 30-40 minutes.
  • Stir in garlic about 1 minute and scrape up the brown bits on the bottom of the pot, deglazing the pan.
  • Next add 5 cups beef broth, coconut aminos, coconut milk, apple cider vinegar and sea salt.
  • Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • In a small cup or bowl, whisk together remaining cup of broth with arrowroot flour.
  • When flour mixture is thoroughly combined, add to stock pot and simmer another 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Add a little more sea salt to taste if needed.

This one-pot treat is so easy to make and is sure to leave you satisfied. I hope you give this a try, I know you’re gonna love it!

Notes

If soup seems to need more liquid, you can always add more broth.  Also, add more sea salt to taste if needed.
