Best Chocolate Protein Shake (Dairy & Sugar-Free)

Protein shakes are the perfect go-to breakfast, lunch or snack. They are a quick and easy meal-replacement whether you're trying to lose weight or just want to pack in some extra nutrition. High protein & low sugar is always the key here.

Are you a fan of breakfast? We are really not breakfast people around here.  I could go hours and not eat a thing and be fine until lunch or supper.  My girls don’t like to eat right when they wake up either.  So, my solution to make sure we begin our day with a nutritious breakfast is: protein shakes.  Protein shakes are a great way to get lots of vitamins & nutrients in your system, especially at the start of your day.  The best way to do this is to incorporate protein and keeping the shakes low in sugar.

What You Need To Make This Protein Shake

  • almond milk
  • cocoa powder
  • collagen protein
  • SweetLeaf Stevia
  • ice

By adding protein, it will help keep you feeling full and satisfied. My favorite protein to add to our shakes is Vital Proteins Collagen Protein Powder.

Collagen is the vital building block of our bodies including skin, hair, nails, bones and joints, (just to name a few).  Our bodies cannot synthesize enough collagen on their own and it decreases as we age.  Modern foods contain minimal collagen so it is very important that we are supplementing with a high quality collagen supplement.

I love the fact that collagen can boost brain health, therefore producing better mood, sleep and focus.  This is why I love to start our day adding this to our shakes, especially on school and work days, (when we need to focus the most).

So, let’s get to the next important component, your sweetener of choice.  You want to keep the sugar minimal, or in my opinion, no sugar at all…I see it all the time, someone makes a great vitamin-rich smoothie or shake and then ruins it by adding sweetener that’s gonna defeat the whole purpose.  This is why I like to add SweetLeaf Stevia.  You can’t go wrong with an all-natural zero-sugar sweetener.

I must mention here though, not all Stevia products are created equal.  Most on the market are made from GMO corn, which can cause a whole list of health concerns, (another post for another day).  Besides that, corn raises blood sugar which causes health concerns as well.  SweetLeaf Stevia is the only Stevia sweetener that I use and trust. It doesn’t take much, a little goes a long way.  Half to one teaspoon for this recipe usually works for me. You can always add more if you like your shakes a little sweeter.

How To Make These Protein Shakes

  • Add all ingredients to a blender.
  • Blend until smooth.

It's that simple. I pretty much make these protein shakes every single day, sometimes twice a day for my family.  They love them for breakfast and often in the evening for a special treat.  In my opinion, these really taste like a milkshake, (my family would agree).  You won’t believe it’s actually good for you!

A Few Tips

You can always add more Stevia, cocoa powder or ice to your liking.

Protein shakes can certainly be healthy as long as you're sticking to ingredients such as these.

I’ve used a lot of blenders in my days, from more expensive brands to the cheaper ones.  In my experience, I always go back to this less expensive one.  It does the job better than any blender on the market.  And keep in mind, I use a blender every single day, sometimes 2 to 3 times a day…this model has been a trooper!
